What Do I Need in Hosting?

Windows vs Linux - Which Do I Need?

Not sure what hosting you need? Do I need one type rather than the other? Does it really matter which type of hosting I have?

If you are new to hosting, then these questions are reasonable and even necessary. What are the differences between the different types of hosting? Here are a few tips for you to help you make a decision.

Both Linux-based hosting and Windows based hosting have respective upsides and drawbacks.

Linux hosting is the most prominent form of hosting on the Internet. This is because many of the technologies that run on Linux hosting, as well as the operating system itself, are all open source, that is, completely free. Linux based hosting has a very low cost because of these factors. In addition, Linux web hosting expands extremely well, so as your site grows it remains easy to manage. The only downside to Linux hosting is the lack of support for most Windows based applications and coding languages. However, Linux tends to be more stable and offers greater performance than a Windows server.

Windows hosting is based on Microsoft's Windows operating system. It should be used if you intend to host a site that uses ASP, .NET framework, Windows Streaming Media, MS Access and MSSQL database, Coldfusion, or any other Microsoft proprietory technology. Windows hosting can support PHP, MySQL and some other technologies commonly seen on Linux servers, but can be more problamatic with them. Windows based hosting is ideal for those who need easy compatability of Microsoft based technologies. The cost of Windows web hosting is generally higher than Linux hosting due to licensing of various Windows environment technologies. There are also few open source solutions for Windows hosting.

Your choice of server platform should be dictated by the use to which you intend to put it. If you intend hosting Microsoft-based content or coding scripts, then you will need Windows-based hosting. If you are going to host any other type of content, including content-management systems such as Joomla, Wordpress, or Drupal, then we recommend using Linux-based hosting.
